Weeks 2 and 3: experimenting with the projector

The first thing we wanted to do was test out the effect of projecting images onto umbrellas.

The image below shows the umbrella at a height of about 2.5m.

We started testing the difference in the projected image quality between the umbrella material and white paper. We have been considering using a particular material called "tyvek" to line the inside of the umbrellas, thus also covering the stretchers. It is quite noticeable that the images are clearer on the paper compared to that projected onto the umbrella itself.

See the difference...

As we planned to use one projector for four umbrellas (for sake of practicality), we decided to use bi-concave lenses to broaden the projected images. At the moment the images projected are only big enough to fit two umbrellas (we want to restrict the height of the umbrellas to a maximum of 3m from the ground, hence the images on them are smaller) so using lenses seemed a good 'filter' to use. These are the ones we are working with.

The video below shows us playing with the lens in order to make the projected image bigger to fit the four umbrellas.
